What is the "ropada" gemstone?

+1 vote
I believe ropada is used to dye and pass for ruby in India.  I cannot find any information on the web. Can anyone advise me please what is Ropada ie which crystal group or gemstone family does it belong to? Is it merely colourless corundum that is dyed or is it something different altogether?

The internet references I found speak of Rapada as a natural stone. There is also a map with a reference maybe to a region in India.
