You typically have an outer shell matrix and a crystallized mineral inside. The mineral inside usually is carried inside the shell in solution. The water evaporates leaving mineral deposits which form crystals under the right conditions.

The most common geode type is composed of quartz, which is SiO2. Geodes can also contain other materials, such as calcite, goethite, or pyrite, to name a few.
