Malachite is a copper carbonate and is mostly available from Zaire, Africa.  Easily obtained.  Heavy.  Priced by weight and intricacy of the carved objects.

Red Garnet is found in many more regions of the world, is a much harder stone and readily available.  Garnet has many more industrial uses such as the grit on sandpaper.
