How is heat treatment of a stone done?

I talked to a stone guy who says he treats his in a kiln. Supposedly, his grandfather was a stone mason and rocks split easier that way. I am thinking though, you are referring to heat treating a stone to get specific color changes. There may be specific methods to each stone.
