For example, I found this yellow and red rock on the beach in Tampa, Florida. Light passes through it. It is the only rock like it I've ever found. It is not magnetic. It does not scratch glass. All this is accomplished by shining a light behind it, using a magnet and checking to see if it is hard enough to scratch a beer bottle. Everything easy enough to tell us how hard the rock is, whether it is translucent or magnetic. That along with the photo is many times enough to identify it.
