How do I identify the difference between an amethyst and a Tourmaline purple

Amethyst is purple Quartz. It should be very hard. The crystals are hexagonal and pyramidal.

Tourmaline also has hexagonal structure. You can just google both and view samples. If you type in rough amethyst or rough tourmaline you will get a look at samples of each which may give you a better idea of the difference.

Tourmalines in a purple color are rarely encountered, and will generally be a darker color than amethyst. Most purple gemstones are amethyst.
