Need help identifing this Fossil/Rock, any ideas?

0 votes

I seen a similar picture of this in an old Rock/mineral/fossil book. That book identified it as Pentamerus a brachiopod, but I think it was a misprint because I can't find anything resembling this in the brachiopods. Can anyone help me with what this is? It came out of a lapidarian's estate sale, was one of many that was't identified.

It does not appear to be a fossil to me. I have several rocks like it broken up into segments by another substance. Mine are black and red. I am however no paleontological protege'. I took mine to the mineral museum in Houghton, Michigan. No luck identifying it.
