aquamarine changes to clear in different lighting

0 votes

I bought a ring off the internet on Etsy and the person advertised it as an aquamarine. In the picture it appeared to be an aquamarine but I don't know much. alt text

When I got it it looks like this when I'm outside alt text

and this when I'm inside. Almost clear alt text

Just wanted to know if this is normal or is it not an aquamarine. I've read the when you view the aquamarine from different angles it is a different shade of blue which is true when I'm outdoors but inside it is clear regardless of what angle I look at it from.

That is interesting indeed. I have never seen a color-changing aquamarine. Its not changing the actual color, but the intensity seems to change, which is unique. Its unusual but I guess possible.

So you think it's probably a genuine aquamarine?

No way to tell without testing it. I am just saying that although aquamarine usually doesn't have a color change, I wouldn't rule it out. Topaz looks similar and glass and other simulants abound. The only way to know for sure would be to bring it into a professional jeweler for testing.

The only colour changing stone that I know of is Alexandrite. It may have been labelled wrong. If so, then you are a lucky lady, it is very hard to come by and is usually very expensive.

Looks too light to be alexandrite. Only common gemstones with that color are aquamarine and blue topaz.
