Beautiful laker found on Sunday. Anyone knowledgeable about lake superior agates, i would appreciate an evaluation of type and quality, i.e., what kind of agate, fortification, agate, eye agate, tubular agate, painted agate...
Definitely a nice agate with a good round shape. Except for large and quality agates, these are mostly collector's items with a limited value determined by collectors based on their size, color, and pattern.
I want to know more about how to categorize this agate.
There are hundreds of synonyms one can apply to agate - many of them made up - but if you found this at Lake Superior, the best way to categorize it is simply as a "Lake Superior Agate"
This is a tubular agate, but it has fortification and it is a rare color. Does anyone know anybody who grades these things?
Here it is, Mike...
Hershel, this is a very fine agate.. My son got offered 100,00 dollars for it.
I assume you mean $100? What are it's dimensions?
It's a little bigger than a silver dollar, thick as a pancake, color is rare and it's tubular. Dang near 100% agate. Really like it. Next summer, I'm going to the Caledonia mine in Houghton, Mi for a mineral dig and Minnesota for agates. We get a three yard shovel of mine extracted detritus. Will look for greenstone, thompsonite and other stuff. We will post our finds. Cost is two bills. Four people all day.
Does anybody know if the rose color here would make this a paint agate.
