I've got a smooth, small, brown rock with a tiny bit of cleavage and a little bit of fracture. I can't identify it.

Where did you find it? Any way of testing its hardness?

I found it in a road cut and its hardness is between 5 and 6.

I would have thought its some sort of microcrystalline quartz but the hardness disproves that. Its going to be difficult to analyze without more complex tests...
