the top stone is Selenite.
But what is the other? I thought that is was discoloured selenite, but the layers are different.
It does not scratch glass, I can scrape of some with my fingernail.
I'm guessing it is a gypsum or a calcite, but which one?
It actually looks more like ulexite (aka "TV stone").
Thx Hershel, in my search I had already stumbled on ulexite, however it is not transparent enough. Or does that depend on the way the mineral has been cut/cultivated?
Is there a test I could do?
I ran across borax, then tincalconite en then I found trona.
Do you think it might be trona?
Can't guarantee the bottom piece, but the top piece is almost certainly ulexite. That's the way it typically looks and is readily available to collectors.
The top stone I bought as being selenite. If it is ulexite then I am a lucky girl...:)
However my question was about the stone below the selenite.
I will add some better pictures.
Looks like talc. Does it have a greasy feel? Can you scratch it with your fingernail?
