whether rough emerald is technically a gem

Any one could help me in answering my Question " Whether Rough Emerald is a GEM" As per results received from various dictionaries and net surfing a GEM is Cut and polished Semi precious and precious stone. Pl help me

Generally the term gem is reserved for cut and polished gemstones. Gemstone is a more generic term that usually refers to the rough material, but is sometimes also used to substitute the word gem. So to answer your question, rough emerald is a gemstone, and when faceted it becomes a gem.
