Michigan Tech in Houghton Michigan, Lake Superior region, Porcupine Mountains, Huron Mountains, Brockway Mountain, copper mines, iron mines. Great geological region. Has the Geological museum on campus. Some of the oldest rock formations in the world.

Really there are many, the standard engineering schools would give you your start. So, in-state schools would be cheaper. Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin. Then Stanford is probably number one overall. Basic degree can be from anywhere. A professional degree from the area you want to concentrate on will give you better preparation for the career.
