If it is a metallic ore, you could help with identification by answering these questions: Are they magnetic? If so, how strongly attracted is it to the magnet? Does it stain your hands? If so, it might actually be graphite. And, can you post a better picture with a size reference, such as a penny? We can go from there!

Iron ores will be strongly magnetic. The brown may be oxidation. That would rub off(not completely) but it would stain your fingers with the dust. As for the reference piece, a coin or ruler in any picture will give perspective. Are these rocks heavier than similar sized rocks? That would also be a strong indicator of metallic ore.
