How can hematite that has been soaked in salt water be restored to it's former luster?

Why would anyone soak hematite in salt water?

Regardless, the luster and finish of the stone might be restored by tumbling it. No guarantee here. The ferrous content may have oxidized and destroyed the stone but tumbling may remove the outer layers and restore it and it may not. Worth a try...
