Rubies and sapphires are corundum. It can be faceted.

To elaborate on Weasel's comments: Ruby and sapphire in gem form clearly can be faceted and make popular jewelry. However, corundum is also found in rough form that is not gem material and not worthy of being faceted, and most of the items in the bucket sifters are not facetable material.
