In this case, the silica quartz is harder than the matrix (crust) the crust has worn away and exposed the crystalized quartz inside. There may be agate around the quartz crystals.

Hi Weasel, Thanks for the information. It's such an interesting specimen it would be a shame to dissect it. I should look that good when I am 65 million years old?
In this view the specimen has one eye and is looking straight at you. Go ahead and take a look..... what an imagination, huh? :-)
