My friend tried to clean her amythyst rock by putting in running water, and it turned black. How can she clean it or is it ruined?

Water can seep into amethyst, some amethyst is red, brown and black.. i have not heard of it changing color. Usually, it can change colors if it is subjected to heat. Then it turns an orange/yellow which is often sold as citrine.

Amethyst gets its color from iron. Exposure to light over time can turn amethyst almost white.

Water and a toothbrush, mild soap will not harm it.
