Is This Hematite?

0 votes

Hello!  I was wondering if anyone could tell me if my necklace is Hematite or something else.  A Kenyan woman gave it to my husband when he was there a long time ago and not married, and she told him to give it to his wife some day.  I thought it could be Hematite since I believe it is mined in Kenya, and it looks shiny and that gray/black color, but I haven't found any pictures where they are shaped this way.  When I tested it with a gem tester, the needle went up to in between the Jadite/Spinel line and the Topaz line.   I am a novice so I really have no idea if that is relevant or not.  If anyone could share their thoughts about what my necklace is, I would really appreciate it!  Thank you.

I don't know if this link will help, but I found some hematite beads shaped this way at:

The hematite at this web site is silver in color but it could easily be grey, black or gun-metal in color.

I haven't been able to find any connection, but I suspect that if your beads are hematite, there is some connection between Kenyan myth or ritual, hematite and marriage.  You might try emailing the Kenyan Embassy in Washington D.C. (information@kenyaembassy.com) telling them your story and posing your questions to them (especially, whether there is in Kenya any particular significance of hematite for marriage).  Hope this helps.
