Are there gemstones with optical properties?

0 votes

I bought this beautiful ring from a local pawn shop. Sterling silver, made in Italy. When I look through the cabochon at another object or the skyline, it appears upside down. I know why magnifying glasses do this, but I've never had a piece of jewelry with optical properties! In the third photo is a view of my back garden as seen through the stone. So, is it glass or something else? Thanks for any replies.
