how do i go about finding out what kind of minerals i have found?

I live in a small town, which at one time mined copper. The mine closed in 1983 I recently purchased a home and in my front yard I was digging and found some rock. After cleaning it up I noticed different colors. Parts of it look gold, silver and copper.  Where can I go to check this?

A lapidary will be able to help. A local university should have a geology professor. I take mne to mineral shows, check the internet for the next one near you. Finally, find a rock and mineral store. They might be able to help. OR, you could post a picture here. Tell us what you know about it and we'll do our best.

Definitely post some pictures so we can take a look and try to help. Please also try to provide the name of the nearby mine so we can identify the mode of occurrence for that area.
