puke colored stone? (need help identifying)

0 votes

I have no idea what this is, and even my friend, who does nothing but collects gemstones, couldnt tell me what it was. I got it from the dog trade, which is a small little market in my town on sundays. Some times there is a guy there who sells crystals and gemstones.

anyone know what this is?

In the first picture there's a unique pattern that I would have suggested as agate but I don't see it as much in the second photo. Sure a special piece since it looks a bit unusual! Maybe if you can, take it to that store again and see if they could identify it for sure. If they sell it, someone's gotta know what it is.

It is an agate. It appears to have been polished. I would ask you several questions which may help us identify the matrix ( surrounding rock). First, where does it come from. The store may be able to tell you. Is the stone dyed. Also the store may know.

The upper third of your rock appears to be fortificaton agate. Agate forms in pockets of magma. As the rock cools air bubbles form. When it cools further and contracts silica rich minerals find their way in and evaporate, leaving layers of silica which under the right conditions form agate. The matrix is not as hard as the agate. The matrix wears away. Then, the banding becomes visible. Here, in this case, someone has polished the entire stone. The uniform color of stone and agate tells me it has been dyed at some point. Many agate collectors will not collect polished or cut stones some will to make jewelry.

I cant really go and ask the guy i bought it from, because its like a small table he sets up. at the dog trade everyone sells their handmade items and junk. He doesnt know what the stones are, other than his daughter tumbles them and sends him to him as gifts from collage
