Recently bought an 18K gold ring with a carnelian seal...the carving on the seal is a Roman soldier. How can I determine the age of the seal???

I do not believe it is possible, suject matter and style of setting might be indicators as would any maker's marks or country seals or stamps. An expert with the right equipment might be able to determine tool marks and such and give you a closer approximation. The problem is Victorian images can be made today. Roman images have been popular for two thousand years. Some pieces come with provenance like photos of the seal actually being used or the seal ring being worn by someone during a specified time, you know the family photo of great uncle Charlie showing him wearing the ring before he went to the civil war.
