This looks like quartz crystal. The brown stuff looks like some organic material in a fissure in the crystal.

Quartz is very hard. The concave divots or depressions are called conchoidal fractures. The rock does not crack like other rocks but splinters out in flakes like the flint in arrow and spear points.The brown debris or material could have seeped into the fissure in a liquid or aqueous solution and solidified after the liquid evaporated.
