I have round stones which appear greyish brown but are redish brown if the outer layer is removed. what could they be

Where did you find them? A mine in Duluth, Minnesota, or on the beach in San Diego.

May be some kind of garnet. Almandine for example.

Certainly looks most like garnet. Though additional origination information will be helpful.
