I found this stone near my home. It has a relatively smooth texture, and attracts magnets. Any ideas...?alt text

If it attracts magnets, its most likely hematite or magnetite. How strong is the magnetic attraction? Is it very strong or just a somewhat attracted? Also is there any other such material in the area? Can you describe the area where it was found? It could also be an iron meteorite, though that's highly unlikely.

Nothing else remotely similar in the area. I have been hounding here for quite some time. Found it in southwestern lower Michigan on some heavily wooded acreage near a lake. The attraction is such that it drew a small RE to it; had them setting close on a desk. The raised multidirectional line have me puzzled.

Can you check to see its streak?

Southwestern Michigan makes the rock almost positively sedimentary.
