I think that you are right. What I have found is that the "rock" is actually a section of core brought up from underground in a mine in Springbok in the Northern Cape in South Africa. I was amazed how messy it was for a rock - all the lepidolite (which is very thin and breaks off the "rock" ) was surprising to me. But I tried to pry a little loose and I found that it is in a very porous white mix - which is not solid rock. I can separate the purple mica into many rounds. I think that it has just been compacted into the core.
