red mottled opaque stone (please help identify)

0 votes

these stones were sold to me by a bead dealer in manhattan as aventurine. http://oanaradulescu.net/mottled-red-opaque-stone.JPG

so i kept calling them aventurine in marketing materials etc (aspiring jewelry designer here :)). but upon running a google search for aventurine a while back, i have become suspicious of this claim. the examples of aventurine returned by the search look nothing like these stones!

perhaps they're jasper?

any leads are greatly appreciated. i would love to learn more about stones!

Aventurine is green and looks nothing like these. The color doesn't look natural, and I would suspect these are some sort of dyed material such as jasper. If the peddler selling you these labelled them as aventurine, he cannot be trusted and the suspicion of these being dyed is even stronger.
