I have garnet that is surrounded by a mineral I believe is a Matrix mineral. Is it possible to separate the two?

It depends what the matrix is. Certain solvents can dissolve different matrix types - for example calcite can be dissolved in acid. Garnet matrix is often schist - this can be difficult to remove through solvents, and likely need to be manually graded down.
