Is it easier to identify stones and gems once they are polished and does polishing them deminish their value if they are to be sold?

These questions are very general as each gemstone has its own unique rules regarding this. It depends on the gemstone, color, polish, aesthetics, rarity, etc.

Gemstones are cut and polished. Rough stones weigh more , think karats, however the value and use can be determined by the user, whereas a cut and polished stone is pretty much set in stone value wise. If I get to choose how I want to cut and polish and use a stone, it is worth more to me than a cut stone
