Heavy stone found in my cottage, possible Pyrite.?

0 votes

Hi,

I found a very heavy hard stone at my cottage, buried a meter in the ground. I believe this is Pyrite, I am just curious because the stone weighs 24kg it is also more silver colored, never seen such a big Pyrite rock. I did some other measurements, specific gravity approx 5 g/cm3, mohs hardness over 6. It is also completely black burned weathered on surface so looks like a meteorite, now I am pretty sure its not a meteorite :)

Thanks. When you break it open, does it have a metallic silvery look to it? If so, and if it has a black streak and the hardness you described, pyrite would be the best bet.

Hi,

Yes it has a silver metallic look to it like on the first picture I was just surprised by the size of it, usually just seen pyrite as intrusions in rocks, this is a big chunk of pyrite. Thank you for your help :)
