Need help identifying some stones

0 votes

I have inherited some stones from my grandmother and I have no idea how to even start trying to identify them. Any advice or answers would be extremely helpful. If you need or would like any other photos please ask.

This is the first one

1st one is Smoky Quartz 2nd is either fluorite or amethyst (can be easily determined with a scratch test) 3rd looks like a polished slab of serpentine, but could also be epidote with quartz. 4th is a sliced agate 5th is difficult to determine by visual observation 6th is an agate slice with a hollow quartz center (geode slice) 7th is a polished agate

Thank you so much!

How do I do a scratch test to figure out if the 2nd is fluorite or amethyst?

When you call them 'agate', why do they look so different? are there different types of agate?

Sorry if my questions seem stupid haha

Scratch test: use an empty beer/wine bottle but a piece of window glass will do fine.

Try to scratch the glass with the stone; if it leaves a streak the stone is harder then glass. In this case; if the stone does NOT scratch the glass it is fluorite. (But I'm guessing it is an amethyst as fluorite is usually more cubical.)

And yes there are very may different kind of agates. http://www.minerals.net/mineral/agate.aspx Very nice and beautiful collection you have there.

The pink/peach druzy stone might be rhodocrosite. Or Druzy Rose Agate.
