Yellow calcite with malachite?

0 votes

alt textHi,

I have this stone and don't really know what it is. I'm guessing it is a calcite (does not sratch glass) with a layer of malachite.

What do you think?

Does it fizz with acid? If it does, then the orange is calcite. If it doesn't fizz, then I'm pretty sure it's fluorite. What is its hardness?

You can use vinegar as acid.

Crystal shape of the yelllow rhomb is definitely indicative of calcite. Though don't see any malachite. And yes, koala is right about calcite's reaction to acid - a dead giveway for calcite.

Hi Hershel and Koala,

Did the acidtest; very tiny bubbles so it is a calcite.

What do you mean, Hershel, that you don't see any calcite?

I have made another pic as close as I could get... I'm almost certain it is malachite...

I meant malachite - sorry for the confusion. I revised that text so it makes more sense now.
